چکیده
Computational assessment of atherosclerotic plaque components in MR images Evaluation of the composition of atherosclerotic plaques in images is an important task to determine their pathophysiology. Visual analysis is still as the most basic and often approach to determine the morphology of atherosclerotic plaques. In addition, computeraided methods have also been developed for identi cation of features such as echogenicity, texture and surface in such plaques. Also, the identi cation of atherosclerotic plaque components, extraction and analysis of its features, and classi cation of the disease progression is an essential factor to predict the occurence of future cerebral events. Computational algorithms play an important role to automatic segment such components in order to expedite the clinical diagnosis. In this thesis proposal, a review of the most important methodologies that have been developed to identify the main components of atherosclerotic plaques in images is presented. Hence, computational algorithms that take into consideration the analysis of the plaques echogenicity, image processing techniques, clustering algorithms and supervised classi cation used for segmentation, i.e. identi cation, of the atherosclerotic plaque components in ultrasound, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance images, are introduced. This PhD project is intended to propose novel methodologies for improving the existing researches related to the segmentation of atherosclerotic plaque components, extraction of its features and classi cation of the lesion type. Thus, the future tasks to be developed are indicated and summarized.

Preoperative detection of the composition of atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid artery using ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging.
Preoperative identification of the components of atherosclerotic plaque was attempted using ultrasonography in five patients and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in three patients before carotid endarterectomy. The correlation between surgical and histological findings, and preoperative ultrasonography and MR imaging was evaluated. Plaque consisting predominantly of calcification appeared as bri...
متن کاملIdentification and Quantitative Assessment of Different Components of Intracranial Atherosclerotic Plaque by Ex Vivo 3T High-Resolution Multicontrast MRI.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE High-resolution 3T MR imaging can visualize intracranial atherosclerotic plaque. However, histologic validation is still lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of 3T MR imaging to identify and quantitatively assess intracranial atherosclerotic plaque components ex vivo with histologic validation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-three intracranial arterial specime...
متن کاملAutomatic plaque characterization employing quantitative and multicontrast MRI.
Multicontrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown promise in identifying and characterizing atherosclerotic plaques. One of the limitations of this technique is the lack of a practical automated plaque characterization scheme. In the current study, a prior-information-enhanced clustering (PIEC) technique that utilizes both multicontrast MR images and quantitative T(2) maps is proposed to...
متن کاملIn vivo magnetic resonance evaluation of atherosclerotic plaques in the human thoracic aorta: a comparison with transesophageal echocardiography.
BACKGROUND The structure and composition of aortic atherosclerotic plaques are associated with the risk of future cardiovascular events. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may allow accurate visualization and characterization of aortic plaques. METHODS AND RESULTS We developed a noninvasive MR method, free of motion and blood flow artifacts, for submillimeter imaging of the thoracic aortic wall....
متن کاملHigh-resolution intravascular magnetic resonance imaging: monitoring of plaque formation in heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits.
BACKGROUND The individual makeup of atherosclerotic plaque has been identified as a dominant prognostic factor. With the use of an intravascular magnetic resonance (MR) catheter coil, we evaluated the effectiveness of high-resolution MR in the study of the development of atherosclerotic lesions in heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixteen hyperlipidemic rabbits were invest...
